The perfect gift for Veterans Day
This Veteran’s Day, how about we give veterans leadership opportunities to show our appreciation?
Recently a colleague was wondering what his company should do to show support for veterans on Veterans Day. He owns a professional services company, and though he never served himself, has a deep appreciation of military service. It didn’t really make sense for him to give away free services to veterans (since most veterans would never use them), and he thought a free t-shirt or hat wouldn’t have much of an impact on a veteran’s life. And he wanted to make an impact.
“What about making a donation to a veteran-related charity?” I suggested, going with the most obvious but perhaps least used options. “There are so many veterans charities that address everything from veteran homelessness to mental health to service dogs.”
He took my suggestion and then did me one better — he donated to TEN veterans charities.
And this got me thinking: What do veterans REALLY need for Veterans Day?
Instead of a free appetizer or 10 percent off coupon, what if we started putting qualified veterans into leadership positions?
