Sometimes, there’s construction

Finding Meaning in the Detours

Occasionally, when we decide to try a new route to a new destination, we run into construction. Perhaps a new intersection is being built that slows us down. So we try to rush ahead, nose our way in, or even curse the other drivers.

In Michigan, we have what’s called a “Michigan Left” (In high school, my mom called it a “Doo-Wah-Diddy”). You have to go right three times to go left before you’re pointed in the right direction. When you first encounter one of these intersections, it seems complicated & pointless.

However, it really does improve traffic flow, especially when there’s a lot of traffic (the one exception is during a snowstorm, but that’s another metaphor. Stick with me here.)

Where in your life are there (metaphorically speaking) new intersections being built? Where do you need to, at least temporarily, slow down & pay more attention to what’s happening around you? Heed the warning signs?

Don’t worry — eventually, the construction will be completed, and there will be a brand new intersection that you can speed right through. However, for now, you simply need to be patient: patient with the process, with others, and with yourself. It’s normal to feel frustration and anxiety.

To create new roads to new destinations, your old routes (thoughts, behaviors and beliefs) simply won’t work anymore.

Be patient. Soon enough, you’ll be on your way.
